The comments below relate to UK nationals holding a valid UK Passport, other passport holders should enquire at the US Embassy.

A valid passport with at least six months remaining on it at the end of your stay, is required.

The VISA waiver programm allows access to the US without having to visit the US Embassy to get a visa but all travellers must have a valid ESTA number.

ESTA or Electronic Authority to Travel can be applied for at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/ the application only takes a few minutes and, if approved, generates a long number which is your approval to travel for two years. The ESTA costs $14 per person and each person in your party will need their own.

Make sure you make a note of the ESTA number as I was once asked to produce it at check in (Iceland Air). I now write the number in the back of my passport, as I very nearly missed the flight.
